Koncept Interview

Koncept & Tranzformer – Change Feat. Jeffersion Price

Koncept & Tranzformer leaked another solid track alongside the Official Video to the net today. Seems like an appropriate time to spotlight our interview with Koncept. Big thanks to Koncept for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer a few Q's for his fans.

Q: What’s up Koncept?
       What’s up homie! Staying busy.

Q: When did you start constructing bars? How long have you been composing witty verses for?
I’ve been rapping since I was about 14 or 15 years old, although I didn’t take it seriously until about 2005. By seriously, I mean choosing to make it my career.

Q: When did you link up with The Brown Bag All-Stars?
Well we linked up while all working at Fat Beats NY record store. We all became friends and and started chilling before deciding to form the group. We started the group in late 2007, early 2008.

Q: Look Back, one of the 5 tracks you released as part of More Than Meets The Eye Collaborative EP, it speaks to me. What was your inspiration for the lyrics?
Thank you. As cliché as it may sound, that songs inspiration just came from instances surrounding my life. I really did fall in love and get married to a foreigner. I did grow up in a middle class family raised most of my life by just my mother with help from my grandmother. And like a lot of people, when I wake up in the morning and have to go to a job that I hate, my head hurts. Ha, Hopefully I won’t have to do that much longer.

Q: Tranzformer, the Lead Producer on More Than Meets The Eye Collaborative EP’s style seems to fit your flow really well. Will we be seeing more joint work from you too in the future? Is Tranzformer a part of The Brown Bag All-Stars?
We’re currently working on a full album. The EP was 5 joints to show people what we were working on and the direction we were going with sound wise. We’ve recorded a couple more joints besides those ones, and in our opinion they are better than the joints we’ve given out. I think you will really like them. Tranzformer is a BBAS affiliate. Dude is a beast.

Q: Will Tranzformers be a featured producer on your upcoming joints?
As for right now, we’re just working on this project. Although, you will definitely see us working together on other stuff in the future.

Q: Are you and Audible Doctor working on anything at the moment?
Well, I have another project that will be dropping this year that is all Brown Bag Production. J57 & The Audible Doctor produced a majority of it. The beats alone are ridiculous! This project is like my baby.

Q: It must have been pretty humbling to get to partake in DJBooth.net’s Weekly Freestyle Series. Audible Doctor flipped a great sample, and your “makers mark” line instantly perked my ears. What was that experience like?

Koncept - Things You Do (Prod. Audible Doctor)
Thank you, sir. It was a pleasure to be invited to partake in the Freestyle Series. When DJ Z over at DJ Booth had asked me to do it, I hit up Audible to see if he wanted to produce the track and within minutes he sent me a handful of beats which were all bangers. I’m glad that yourself and others were really feeling the final product.

Q: Knuckle Puck. So dope. Khan’s intro says it all. It must be an enjoyable process getting to work with/shoot ideas off of fellow Brown Bag All-Star members. Like a hip hop commune over there. Do you guys primarily craft your verses and record in NY?
That it is. I feel so blessed to be constantly surrounded by such talent. What’s even better is that these people are my close friends. Everything BBAS is recorded in NY and primarily in the Brown Bag studio, at least for the group material. All my solo stuff is recorded in my own studio.

Q: Any chance us Left Coasters will get to see Koncept in 2011? The Brown Bag All-Stars in 2011?
Hope to be there very soon. If not before, definitely when Tranzformer and myself finish the album. That goes for BBAS as well. We plan to hit every city you can think of. Promoters, hit us up!

Q: Can you speak on any upcoming projects you got in the works? Albums or Mixtapes? Any collaborations in the works that us fans need to know about?
So much in the works. I’ll just list them off:
       Koncept & Tranzformer full album.
Koncept “awaken” which will be my first born.
       Koncept & j57 EP.
       Koncept &DJ Brace LP.
Brown Bag AllStars “Brown Bag Season Vol. 1” Double CD dropping in May on DJ Brace’s ;Nostomania Records.
Then will come the Brown Bag AllStars debut LP which will make your head explode! Pause.

We appreciate your time Koncept. The fans appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to flip a few Q&A’s with us.
No, thank you, homie. I appreciate the love and support. Thank you to everyone that has supported me thus far. Ya’ll are the best! Love ya’ll. If you haven’t already, download Koncept & Tranzformer “More Than Meets The Eye” free EP presented by DJBooth.net, as well as my other free EP, “Playing Life.”
